The 80-20 Rule Can Make Your Thyroid-Friendly Primal Diet More Flexible

Learn How The 80-20 Rule Can Make Your Thyroid-Friendly Primal Diet More Flexible.

“A Paleo diet doesn’t have to be super restrictive. Find out how to implement the ‘80/20 rule’ and enjoy what’s on your plate.” – Chris Kresser

Just when detoxing your organs, diet, and lifestyle to naturally support your hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s is hard enough, someone may come along and mention that you that you can’t have pizza, brownies, chocolate, cake, pasta or *insert your favorite comfort or convenience food here* on a Primal diet like Animal-Based, Paleo, or AIP.

Well, let’s get ahead of the guilt game right now, because I DON’T DO guilt with diets.

Yes, we are learning to eat more meat, organs, fruits and/or vegetables. Yes, we are learning to remove grains, sugar, and all the other inflammatory food-like-substances. Yes, we are adjusting to cooking the majority of our meals rather than eating out or ordering in.

But NO, as thyroid patients we don’t have to deprive ourselves and feel stuck, bored, or frustrated with our diet. You don’t always have to eat only spinach, chicken, and sweet potatoes.

Supporting your thyroid is supposed to be a positive, nutrient-dense, liberating experience. And comforting foods, in my opinion, are a necessary part of that experience!

Instead of diving head-first in the the corn-puff aisle, though, we will simply upgrade those comfort foods so that you don’t snap in a moment of intense craving or hangries and grab a candy bar, order chain-restaurant pizza in, or simply starve yourself because nothing on the regular Primal menu sounds appetizing at the moment.

The Primal 80-20 Rule is All About Balance

While these foods and recipes I am going to list below are still full of nutrition and are Primal, please consider them making up no more than 20% of your diet. It’s obviously easier to just snack on pork rinds, honey marshmallows, and Paleo protein bars all day versus chopping up produce and meat and cooking your own meals from scratch, but that habit will not promote nutrient density in the long run (something we need for a happy thyroid).

These ideas are meant to be “in-betweeners” and a portion of a balanced, nutritious, anti-inflammatory diet that is in line with what our ancestors would have eaten and what personally works for your body.

There is no judgement here. We all are just doing the best we can to survive, love ourselves through it all, and recover.
