Headaches, fibromyalgia, muscle pain or joint pain got you down – but you are hesitant to take N-SAIDS due to their potential to cause gut distress?

Here is my list of Paleo Natural Pain Remedies that I refer to when my chronic pain flares up!

There are many forms of chronic pain, and according to some experts, inflammation may be at bay for many of these ails.

But when we want to keep things as natural as possible, due to autoimmune disease, allergies or intolerances or dependency concerns with prescription or over-the-counter pain medications, or chemical sensitivity, where do we turn?

I’ve created a list of tried and trusted pain relief supplements, what type of pain each one is claimed to target, and potential side effects for some of them due to special circumstances.

Please remember this is from my own personal experience, and I am not prescribing these to anyone. We are all different and need to ensure by contacting our doctor first that any one of these are safe or not to take.

Paleo Natural Pain Remedies

Turmeric, fish or krill oil, and ginger

These are great for reducing my inflammation.

Be wary of turmeric in medicinal doses in medicinal doses as it can have a Th cell stimulant effect in some people (depending on which way your immune cells swing in dominance).

If you have a shellfish allergy, avoid krill oil and choose fish oil instead.

Nasal oxytocin

This is really good for my fibromyalgia flare ups when they are being rather persistent.

“Due to its analgesic, anxiolytic, antidepressant and other central nervous system effects, there is strong evidence that oxytocin and other drugs acting through the oxytocin receptor could act as multifunctional analgesics with unique therapeutic value.” *source

I get mine here.

Internal CBD / hemp oil

This can work for some people for allover pain.

“CBD is a type of cannabinoid, a chemical found naturally in cannabis plants. CBD doesn’t cause the “high” feeling often associated with cannabis.” “Some people with chronic pain use topical CBD products, in particular CBD oil, to manage their symptoms.” *source

This is the brand recommended by my immunologist.

RSO (cannabis oil)

On the other hand, some people find that the THC can work great for their pain, but many face accessibility problems in their region due to legality.

T Relief homeopathic tabs

These are great for my fibromyalgia and arhtritis flares, though the compounded tablets do contain some lactose.

I have heard to rotate the green with the red bottle to switch it up (so as to avoid the body getting too used to just one with the result of the remedy theoretically no longer working).

I switch between this red bottle and this green bottle when symptoms flare up.

Nature’s Way B2

For migraines or headaches I take 400mg of straight B2 (NOTE: not B6, or B12, or A B complex) as soon as they start to arise. This has been very helpful when I adjust dosage of my thyroid medication for my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

“High doses of Vitamin B-2 (riboflavin) may help prevent migraine headaches, a European study reports in the journal Neurology. The beneficial effects in reducing migraine frequency appeared after a month of daily doses of 400 mg, and increased over the next two months, researchers said.” *source

I take this brand as it is fairly clean and is well-priced.

Hemprich external hemp cream

This is hard to find in stock right now, but for muscle pain, this external hemp cream works like a MIRACLE for me and my partner!

This brand may be a good substitute due to similar formulation, though I have not tried it yet.

Just a small amount goes a long way, and I use it on my back when my scoliosis acts up and makes my back muscles go haywire, and when my chondromalacia patella really grinds my knee gears. I usually find relief within 20 minutes.

Though the Hemprich filler ingredients could use a little improvement as far as toxin-free products go, in my opinion.

Arnica cream or gel

Arnica is also said to be great externally for muscle/joint pain.

“A 2016 review looked at the effects of homeopathic arnica on pain and inflammation after surgery and found that it was both a safe and effective way to reduce bruising, swelling, and pain.” *source

This is the brand I have tried in the past and found it to be quite soothing.

Herb Pharm cramp bark

For cramps (when I used to have a uterus, which I had removed in February 2020 due to dysmenorrhea from endometriosis and adenomyosis) I used this cramp bark tincture for acute pain.

I also noted that taking this for a few days before menses started actually reduced my period pain more than when only used acutely.

Cramp bark is an antispasmodic that has helped when my other bodily muscles are tense, too.

“Some research indicates that cramp bark fruit extracts help relax muscles and blood vessels, which can relieve pain and reduce blood pressure.” *source

Boswellia

“A clinical trial conducted by Raychaudhuri and co-workers in India has shown that the extract of the plant, Boswellia serrata, can reduce pain and considerably improve knee-joint functions, in some cases providing relief even within seven days.” *source

When I mention boswellia to people struggling with sensitive gut or leaky gut, or if they are on the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol elimination phase, I always say to look for a formula without Bioperine aka black pepper extract – which can be harsh on an already troubled digestive system.

This is the brand I have taken for years and trust. It does contain sunflower lecithin, just something to note if you are strictly avoiding seed based oils. Be sure to verify that if you have leaky gut and search outside this link for boswellia that you find one without the Bioperine addition.

MSM / chondroitin / glucosamine

This was a GAME CHANGER for my chondromalacia patella (aka grindy, creaky, crying-in-pain-when-I-went-up-the-stairs knees).

This combo is touted by chiropractors for cushioning and reducing inflammation in joints in people with arthritis as well.

“Chondroitin, glucosamine, and MSM is a combination medicine that has been used in alternative medicine as a possibly effective aid in treating osteoarthritis, muscle damage caused by exercise, and other inflammatory joint disorders.” *source

This is the brand I use and trust.
