My complicated health journey

Between the years of 2004 and 2008, I had my appendix, tonsils, and gallbladder surgically removed. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this was a sign of an under-functioning and overburdened immune system.

In 2014 I discovered that I likely have Celiac disease, but I am unable to safely get officially tested for it to confirm.

In 2017 I self-confirmed (and was later officially diagnosed) with Hashimoto’s disease, a thyroid autoimmune condition.

In 2018 I was diagnosed with Hypogammaglobulinemia, a primary immunodeficiency that causes chronic infections and increased susceptibility to viruses. Though, later in 2022, a new immunologist discovered I was again making enough immunoglobulins on my own. So it may likely have been a misdiagnosis…and one day I may find the right answer!

After 2018 I was diagnosed with PCOS, endometriosis, and adenomyosis. I chose in 2020 to have a hysterectomy (one that left my ovaries in place) for relief from debilitating dysmennorhea.

In the midst of these years I also discovered – thanks to my wonderful chiropractor – that my chronic back and knee pain were due to scoliosis and chondromalacia patella.

Currently (as of 2023) I am working on putting recently-confirmed reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus, chronic Lyme disease, and other co-infections that had been covertly keeping me in a hypothyroid state since 2019 into remission.

Join me on this Primal journey!

I owe my improved quality of life, reduced pain, and remission of many of my illnesses to an ANCESTRAL DIET & LIFESTYLE & QUANTUM MODALITIES.

Hi there! My husband was recently diagnosed with auto-immune disease. Thankfully, we found an amazing functional medicine doctor and he’s strictly following the AI protocol. Your recipes look amazing and I can’t wait to start making them!. What a wonderful website you’ve created. Thank you for making such a warm community and helpful resource to those of us navigating new territory.

    hi Samantha,

I just read your mini bio and couldn’t believe what I saw… you had/have hypogammaglobulinemia?! How did/do you treat it?

I ask because I was diagnosed with it when I was somewhere around 12-18 months old, in 1967. This was the result of being treated for a bacterial infection with an antibiotic called Chloramphenicol (more commonly known as Chloromycetin). (If you look it up, you will see that it’s quite a serious antibiotic and probably should never have been used the way that it was.) I was in the hospital for a couple weeks and then had monthly injections of gammaglobulin which were horribly painful. But, I lived! 🙂 I now wonder whether this had anything to do with my now ongoing fight with autoimmune disease… hashimoto’s, vitiligo, lichen simplex chronicus, and most recently, autoimmune atrophic gastritis (which I DO NOT recommend). Needless to say… AIP has become my best buddy in my daily fight.

All best to you, and *thank you* for recipes!

      Hey there Melissa,

Wow you are such a warrior! You’ve been through so much. I’m glad you found the AIP, too! 🙂

So the hypogammaglobulinemia (man I wish there was a short version for that, LOL! Maybe we can start a trend and call it “Hypo-G” bc it sounds cool) was treated for about a year (cir. 2019) with IG (immunoglobulin) replacement therapy. Since I had no insurance at the time, I qualified at the time for free medication through a patient assistance program for the medication “Hizentra”. It brought my IG-G levels up and for the first time in years I was no longer sick allllll the time.

Unfortunately (this is where it gets grey) when I qualified later for Medicaid, I no longer qualified for the assistance program. This is because I had to switch to a Medicaid-covered doctor to re-prescribe Hizentra to me, and at the time when he re-checked my IG levels he said they were within normal range, despite being off the medication for 3 months to be able to re-test my levels accurately. He decide that because of this I did not have Hypo-G and that I did not need IG replacement therapy.

The good news in all of this is that during this whole process I switched from working in people’s homes to working at home for myself…and maybe this is another reason why I am not getting sick all the time as I am not exposed to daycare-attending small children anymore!

Though I wish I had better data to share with you from my personal story, DO take a look into subcutaneous IG replacement therapy and see with your doc if it a good fit for you! Here’s Hizentra’s patient assistance info if you need it! https://www.hizentra.com/hcp/igiq-support

I now own all your cookbooks having just purchased the The Animal Based Comfort Food one 🙂 Just wondering if you have a recipe index for that book? I like to print off recipe indexes for easy referral so I don’t have to print the whole book. Thanks so much for your time and attention.
    Kim 🙂
